The Age of innocence

In the gilded halls of 1870s New York high society, appearances are everything, and duty outweighs desire. When the well-bred and respectable Newland Archer becomes engaged to the sweet and conventional May Welland, his future seems secure. But the arrival of the independent and scandalous Countess Ellen Olenska upends his world, forcing him to choose between passion and propriety.

As someone who loves classic literature, The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton is easily one of my favorite reads. It’s one of the best books set in New York, capturing not just the beauty of the city, but the strict social codes and unspoken rules of its upper-class society in the late 19th century.

I loved how Wharton explores themes of love, sacrifice, and societal expectations with such subtlety and grace. It’s not just a love story — it’s a portrait of an entire world that values appearances over happiness.

If you enjoy classics that transport you to another era and make you reflect on human nature, The Age of Innocence is a must-read.
